[Possible causal factors in postoperative immunodepression]

L Dominioni, U Prati, A Zonta

    Summary

Surgical trauma significantly depresses cellular immunity in cancer patients post-operation. This immune suppression, measured by lymphocyte response, was not linked to anesthesia duration, blood transfusions, or corticosteroid use.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Immunology
    • Anesthesiology

    Background:

    • Postoperative immunodepression is a concern in cancer patients undergoing radical surgery.
    • Factors like anesthesia duration, blood transfusions, and corticosteroid use are potential contributors to immune suppression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between postoperative immune depression and several perioperative factors in cancer patients.
    • To identify the primary drivers of cellular immunity depression following major cancer surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed cellular immunity using the lymphocyte blastogenic response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA).
    • Studied cancer patients undergoing radical operations.
    • Correlated immune response with duration of general anesthesia, volume of blood transfusions, corticosteroid administrations, and amount of surgical trauma.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Postoperative depression of cellular immunity showed a significant correlation with the amount of surgical trauma.
    • No significant correlation was found between immune depression and the duration of anesthesia.
    • No significant correlation was found between immune depression and the volume of blood transfusions or corticosteroid administrations.

    Conclusions:

    • Surgical trauma is a significant factor contributing to postoperative immune depression in cancer patients.
    • Perioperative factors such as anesthesia duration, blood transfusions, and corticosteroid use do not appear to significantly impact postoperative cellular immunity in this patient group.
