Peripheral uveitis and ulcerative colitis

G W Zaidman, R S Coles

    Annals of Ophthalmology

    Summary

This case report highlights a potential link between peripheral uveitis and ulcerative colitis, suggesting a common immunologic basis. Comprehensive eye exams are recommended for inflammatory bowel disease patients to detect potential uveitis.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Peripheral uveitis is an inflammatory eye condition.
    • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
    • The association between these two conditions is rarely reported.

    Observation:

    • A 26-year-old woman presented with bilateral peripheral uveitis.
    • Five years later, she developed ulcerative colitis.
    • This case suggests a potential link between the two disorders.

    Findings:

    • This is the first reported case linking peripheral uveitis and ulcerative colitis.
    • Common immunologic phenomena may underlie both conditions.
    • Uveitis in ulcerative colitis patients may be underdiagnosed.

    Implications:

    • Ocular examinations are crucial for all patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
    • Early detection of uveitis can improve patient outcomes.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the immunologic relationship between these conditions.
