    Summary

    Smoking a cigarette increases tidal volume, a breathing measure, in smokers. This effect, likely due to irritant receptors in the throat, returns to normal shortly after smoking cessation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the acute effects of cigarette smoking on breathing patterns.
    • To identify the specific components of cigarette smoke responsible for these respiratory changes.
    • To determine the location of sensory stimulation leading to altered breathing during smoking.

    Main Methods:

    • Breathing patterns were recorded in 14 smokers and 9 non-smokers during and after smoking.
    • Experiments included intermittent charcoal inhalations, oropharyngeal and laryngeal anesthesia with lignocaine, and filtration of particulate matter from smoke.
