    Summary

Endoscopic sphincterotomy offers significant long-term symptom relief for most patients with bile duct stones and papillary stenosis. However, outcomes are less favorable for primary papillary stenosis cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Endoscopy

    Background:

    • Endoscopic sphincterotomy is a standard treatment for choledocholithiasis and papillary stenosis.
    • Long-term efficacy data are crucial for evaluating treatment outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the long-term effectiveness of endoscopic sphincterotomy.
    • To evaluate outcomes in patients with choledocholithiasis and papillary stenosis over a 7-year period.

    Main Methods:

    • A 7-year follow-up study was conducted.
    • Patient outcomes after endoscopic sphincterotomy were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Approximately 90% of patients experienced complete symptom relief or marked improvement.
    • Restenosis and recurrent stones were infrequent events.
    • Long-term results were less favorable in cases of primary papillary stenosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Endoscopic sphincterotomy is highly effective for choledocholithiasis and secondary papillary stenosis.
    • Careful consideration and alternative strategies may be needed for primary papillary stenosis due to less favorable long-term outcomes.
