    Summary

    Newly formed neurons in the adult rat visual cortex were confirmed using advanced electron microscopy. This study provides evidence for neurogenesis in the adult mammalian neocortex, a significant finding for brain plasticity research.

    Background:

    • Previous studies suggested adult neurogenesis in the mammalian neocortex using light microscopy.
    • Confirmation via electron microscopy was lacking due to the rarity of newly formed neurons.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To confirm the existence of newly formed neurons in the adult mammalian neocortex using electron microscopy.
    • To demonstrate the neuronal nature and synaptic connections of these cells.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a novel method combining light microscopic radioautography with serial thin sectioning for electron microscopy.
    • Administered [H3] thymidine to 90-day-old rats and analyzed visual cortex tissue after 30 days.
