    Summary

    Prophylactic cefoxitin significantly reduced postoperative urinary tract infections in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate. This study highlights the importance of antibiotic prophylaxis for preventing infections in this patient group.

    Background:

    • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common surgical procedure.
    • Postoperative urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant complication following TURP.
    • The efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics in preventing UTIs after TURP requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of cefoxitin as a prophylactic antibiotic in preventing postoperative UTIs in patients undergoing TURP.
    • To compare the incidence of infection between patients receiving cefoxitin and those receiving a placebo.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective, randomized, double-blind study was conducted with 110 patients.
    • Patients with preoperative sterile urine undergoing TURP were randomized to receive either cefoxitin or a placebo.

  • Infection rates were assessed at 3 and 7 days postoperatively.

    • Main Results:

    • Cefoxitin significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative UTIs from 26.4% to 3.9% at 3 days and from 42% to 6.5% at 7 days.
    • No correlation was found between infection incidence and patient age, general condition, diagnosis, or surgical factors.
    • There was no significant difference in the incidence or degree of postoperative fever between the groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Preoperative administration of cefoxitin is effective in preventing postoperative UTIs in patients undergoing TURP.
    • Antibiotic prophylaxis should be considered for uninfected patients undergoing TURP to reduce the risk of UTIs.
