    Summary

    Myocardial revascularization significantly reduces the risk of heart attack and cardiac death in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Pre-operative cardiac evaluation and potential revascularization can improve surgical outcomes for these patients.

    Background:

    • Patients with prior myocardial revascularization (coronary artery bypass grafting or percutaneous coronary intervention) often require non-cardiac surgery.
    • The cardiac risk associated with non-cardiac surgery in these patients is a significant concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and outcomes of non-cardiac operations in patients with a history of myocardial revascularization.
    • To determine the protective effect of prior revascularization on perioperative cardiac events.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 96 patients who underwent 136 non-cardiac operations after myocardial revascularization between 1970 and 1979.
    • Analysis of postoperative outcomes, including myocardial infarction, cardiac death, and arrhythmias.
