    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of marathon running on lung function in relation to ambient temperature.
    • To determine if subfreezing temperatures induce bronchoconstriction during endurance exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • Maximal expiratory flow-volume curves were used to assess lung function in 46 and 41 runners before and after marathon races.
    • Lung function parameters were measured at different ambient temperatures, including subfreezing conditions (-2°C to -4°C).

    Main Results:

    • A significant decrease in post-race forced vital capacity (FVC) was observed in runners regardless of temperature.
    • Post-race peak flow at 50% of FVC significantly decreased only in runners exposed to subfreezing temperatures.

    • Healthy individuals may experience bronchoconstriction during endurance exercise in subfreezing environments.
