    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
    • The complement system, particularly the C2 component, plays a role in inflammatory processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the longitudinal changes in C2 hemolytic activity in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
    • To correlate C2 levels with disease activity and clinical course in MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantification of C2 hemolytic activity in serum and CSF samples from 46 MS patients.
    • Serial sample collection over a 1-year interval.
    • Correlation analysis between C2 levels and clinical status (severe active disease, stable, or improved).

    Main Results:

    • Serum C2 levels remained within the normal range throughout the study.
    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) C2 levels were significantly decreased (55-59% of normal) in patients with severe active MS.
