Wilson-Mikity syndrome--a case report

Background:

• Wilson-Mikity syndrome is a rare, benign respiratory disorder of premature infants.
• It is characterized by persistent radiological abnormalities despite a lack of clinical symptoms.

Observation:

• A premature infant presented with transient respiratory distress requiring oxygen at birth.
• The infant subsequently showed persistent radiological findings on chest imaging.
• No other clinical abnormalities were noted post-resuscitation.

Findings:

• The clinical presentation and radiological findings are consistent with Wilson-Mikity syndrome.
• This represents the first documented case of Wilson-Mikity syndrome in Zambia.

Implications:

• This report expands the geographical recognition of Wilson-Mikity syndrome.
• It highlights the importance of recognizing radiological patterns in neonates with a history of respiratory distress.
• Further surveillance may reveal more cases in the region.
