    Summary

Common migraine diagnosis can be challenging, often confused with other vascular headaches. This study found family history and childhood motion sickness are unreliable indicators for common migraine, unlike other types.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Otolaryngology
    • Vascular Headaches

    Background:

    • Distinguishing common migraine from other vascular headaches is crucial for effective drug therapy.
    • Traditional diagnostic indicators like family history and childhood motion sickness may not apply to common migraine.
    • Migraine, including common migraine, is often associated with vestibular dysfunctions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the diagnostic utility of family history and childhood motion sickness in common migraine.
    • To assess the prevalence of vestibular dysfunction in patients with common migraine using objective tests.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study was conducted on patients diagnosed with common migraine.
    • Electronystagmography was used to perform labyrinthine tests.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients with no prior history of vertigo or other neurological/otological disorders were included.
  • Main Results:

    • Family history and childhood motion sickness history did not significantly contribute to the diagnosis of common migraine in the pilot study.
    • Abnormalities in labyrinth function were detected in 80% of common migraine patients.
    • These vestibular dysfunctions were present even in patients without a history of vertigo.

    Conclusions:

    • Family history and childhood motion sickness are unreliable predictors for common migraine.
    • Vestibular dysfunction is highly prevalent in common migraine patients, suggesting a link between migraine and inner ear function.
    • Objective vestibular testing may aid in the diagnosis of common migraine.
