A questionnaire study of hostility in persistent auditory hallucinators

Summary

Psychotic patients with persistent auditory hallucinations showed higher hostility scores than the general schizophrenic population. This suggests a potential link between aggression and auditory hallucinations in psychosis.

Background:

Auditory hallucinations are a common symptom in psychotic disorders.
The relationship between hostility and specific hallucination characteristics requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between hostility and auditory hallucinations in psychotic patients.
To explore if specific features of auditory hallucinations correlate with hostility levels.

Main Methods:

Twenty-six psychotic patients with persistent auditory hallucinations were assessed.
The Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ) was administered.
Patients were subgrouped based on voice duration, location, and quality for comparative analysis.

Patients with auditory hallucinations exhibited significantly higher total hostility scores compared to a normative schizophrenic sample.
Voice location and quality were found to be independent characteristics.
These characteristics were differentially associated with other measured variables.

Conclusions:

A significant link exists between aggressive tendencies and auditory hallucinations in psychotic individuals.
The findings suggest that specific characteristics of auditory hallucinations may relate differently to patient measures.
Further research is warranted to explore these complex relationships and generate new hypotheses.
