Validity of alcoholic's self-reports: duration data

A M Cooper, M B Sobell, L C Sobell

The International Journal of the Addictions
    |April 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

Alcohol abusers accurately reported their days of incarceration and hospitalization. However, they tended to overestimate the number of days compared to official records, indicating a slight overreporting bias in self-assessments.

    Area of Science:

    • Addiction research
    • Psychological assessment
    • Public health

    Background:

    • Accurate self-reporting is crucial for understanding alcohol abuse treatment needs.
    • Previous research often focused on the frequency rather than the duration of alcohol-related events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the validity of self-reported days of alcohol-related incarceration and hospitalization.
    • To evaluate the accuracy of duration data versus incidence data in self-reports.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed a time-line follow-back interviewing technique.
    • Compared self-reported incarceration/hospitalization days with official records.

    Main Results:

    • Most subjects accurately reported the number of days incarcerated in the 360 days prior to treatment.
    • Discrepancies were primarily due to subjects overreporting incarceration days.

    Conclusions:

    • Self-reported duration data for alcohol-related incarcerations is generally valid for treatment populations.
    • A tendency for overreporting incarceration days exists, suggesting a need for careful interpretation of self-reported data.
