I M Baird

    International Journal of Obesity

    Summary

This study found a 320 kcal formula diet safe and effective for outpatient weight reduction. Most obese patients showed no ECG abnormalities, though medical supervision is advised for long-term low-calorie diets.

    Area of Science:

    • Dietetics
    • Cardiology
    • Metabolic Medicine

    Background:

    • Obesity is a significant global health concern.
    • Effective and safe weight reduction strategies are needed for obese patients.
    • Low-calorie diets are a common approach for weight management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a 320 kcal formula diet for outpatient weight reduction.
    • To assess electrocardiogram (ECG) changes in obese patients undergoing the diet.
    • To monitor biochemical and clinical parameters during the dietary intervention.

    Main Methods:

    • 44 obese patients participated in the study.
    • A 320 kcal formula diet was administered for one to two months.
    • Electrocardiograms (ECGs), biochemical estimations, and clinical assessments were performed.

    Main Results:

    • 43 out of 44 patients showed no significant ECG changes.
    • One patient experienced transient T wave inversion, considered of doubtful significance.
    • Minor biochemical changes (serum cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin) were observed without clinical importance.
    • Nitrogen balance reached equilibrium within five to six weeks.
    • One patient on propranolol developed postural hypotension.

    Conclusions:

    • A 320 kcal formula diet is a safe and effective method for outpatient weight reduction.
    • ECG monitoring and medical supervision are recommended for patients on low-calorie diets exceeding one month.
    • While generally safe, careful monitoring for potential side effects like postural hypotension is necessary, especially in patients on medication.
