    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychotherapy
    • Addiction Studies

    Background:

    • Alcoholism and neuroticism are distinct psychological conditions often requiring therapeutic intervention.
    • Interactional therapy is a common approach for treating psychological disorders.
    • Comparing treatment outcomes between different patient groups can inform therapeutic strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the treatment outcomes of alcoholic patients and neurotic patients undergoing interactional therapy.
    • To assess patient progress at eight and 12 months of therapy.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of long-term therapy for alcoholism.

    Main Methods:

    • Three interactional therapy groups comprising 20 alcoholic patients were established.
    • Treatment outcomes were compared between alcoholic patients and 17 neurotic patients in similar therapy.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Outcome assessments utilized patient, therapist, and independent judge evaluations with nomothetic and ideographic measures.
  • Main Results:

    • A higher proportion of alcoholic patients completed 12 months of therapy compared to neurotic patients, despite more initially dropping out.
    • Both alcoholic and neurotic patient groups demonstrated significant improvement across various variables after 12 months.
    • No statistically significant differences in the degree of improvement were found between the alcoholic and neurotic patient groups at 12 months.

    Conclusions:

    • Interactional therapy can lead to significant improvements for both alcoholic and neurotic patients.
    • While initial dropout rates may differ, long-term engagement in therapy is associated with positive outcomes for individuals with alcoholism.
    • The study suggests comparable therapeutic benefits for alcoholism and neuroticism when treated with interactional therapy over a 12-month period.
