    Summary

    Urinary 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) levels were lower in acutely ill anorexia nervosa patients. Post-treatment increases in MHPG correlated with reduced depressive symptoms, suggesting a link between MHPG and depression in anorexia nervosa.

    Background:

    • Anorexia nervosa is often accompanied by depressive symptoms.
    • Urinary catecholamine metabolites, such as 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), are indicators of central noradrenergic activity.
    • The relationship between MHPG levels, weight changes, activity, and depression in anorexia nervosa requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between urinary MHPG concentrations and depressive symptoms in patients with anorexia nervosa.
    • To determine if changes in MHPG levels correlate with weight gain, activity levels, and symptom reduction during treatment.
