    Background:

    • Enkephalin is a key neuropeptide involved in pain modulation and reward pathways.
    • The precise origin of enkephalin in the globus pallidus remains incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the source of enkephalin within the neuronal terminals of the rat globus pallidus.
    • To investigate the role of the cerebral cortex and caudate nucleus in pallidal enkephalin innervation.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized electrolytic and knife cut lesions in rat models.
    • Assessed changes in enkephalin immunofluorescence staining in the globus pallidus and caudate nucleus post-lesion.

    Main Results:

    • Lesions of the cerebral cortex and within the globus pallidus did not alter enkephalin levels.
    • Large lesions in the head of the caudate nucleus significantly reduced enkephalin staining in the globus pallidus.
