    Summary

    Radioimmunoassay (RIA) for prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is more sensitive than enzymatic methods for detecting prostate cancer. While not specific enough alone for screening, RIA-PAP combined with urologic follow-up shows promise.

    Background:

    • Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a biomarker for prostate cancer.
    • Enzymatic methods for PAP measurement have limitations in sensitivity.
    • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) offers potentially higher sensitivity for PAP detection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of RIA for serum PAP in detecting prostate cancer.
    • To assess the feasibility of using RIA-PAP as a screening tool for prostate cancer.
    • To compare RIA techniques with traditional enzymatic methods for PAP measurement.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from 6,320 men over 45 were tested using a solid-phase RIA for PAP.
    • Elevated PAP levels triggered clinical recall and urologic review.

    • Combining RIA-PAP with urologic examination is a specific and promising approach for prostate cancer screening.
