    Background:

    • Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health concern.
    • The presence and proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in drinking water systems are not fully understood.
    • Multiply antibiotic-resistant (MAR) bacteria pose a potential risk to human health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze drinking water from seven communities for the presence of MAR bacteria.
    • To determine the prevalence of MAR bacteria in treated drinking water and source waters.
    • To identify the types of MAR bacteria found in drinking water distribution systems.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected and analyzed drinking water samples from seven communities.
    • Screened bacterial isolates for multiply antibiotic resistance (resistance to two or more antibiotics) using replica plating against five antibiotics.
    • Identified bacterial isolates to the genus level.

    Main Results:

    • 33.9% of standard plate count bacteria in treated drinking water were MAR.
    • MAR bacteria were significantly more prevalent in distribution systems (36.7% and 67.8%) than in raw water sources (20.4% and 18.6%).
    • MAR gram-positive cocci (Staphylococcus) and MAR gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, Moraxella-like group M, Acinetobacter) were commonly identified.

    Conclusions:

    • Drinking water treatment and distribution processes select for bacteria exhibiting the MAR phenotype.
    • Pipeline-associated bacteria may contribute to MAR populations found in tap water.
    • Findings highlight the need for monitoring MAR bacteria in drinking water systems.
