    Summary

    Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) and its hyperthyroid form (SAT-SRH) are usually transient. However, lymphocytic thyroiditis with SRH (LT-SRH) is a progressive disease, often leading to goiter and hypothyroidism.

    Background:

    • Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) are common thyroid conditions.
    • Spontaneously resolving hyperthyroidism (SRH) can occur in both SAT and LT.
    • Long-term outcomes for these thyroid conditions require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term sequelae of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) with spontaneously resolving hyperthyroidism (SRH).
    • To differentiate the natural course of SAT-SRH from LT-SRH.

    Main Methods:

    • A long-term follow-up study (1-15 years) of 124 patients with SAT (with and without SRH) and 54 patients with LT-SRH.
    • Assessment of subsequent thyroid disease development, antithyroid antibody presence, basal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, and TSH response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
