    Background:

    • Rheumatoid disease is often associated with anemia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the activity of enzymes in the haem biosynthetic pathway in patients with rheumatoid disease.
    • To determine levels of porphyrins and their precursors in these patients.
    • To explore potential links between haem biosynthesis, anemia, and rheumatoid disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Enzyme activity assays for six key haem biosynthetic enzymes in blood.
    • Quantification of porphyrins and porphyrin precursors in blood, urine, and feces.
    • Comparison of findings between anemic and non-anemic rheumatoid disease patients.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences in most enzyme activities or porphyrin levels were observed between anemic and non-anemic groups.

    • Depressed coproporphyrinogen oxidase activity is a notable finding in rheumatoid disease patients.
