    Background:

    • Glycoconjugates, complex carbohydrates linked to proteins or lipids, play vital roles in cellular processes.
    • Alterations in glycoconjugate metabolism have been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
    • Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder with suspected underlying biochemical abnormalities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate differences in urinary glycoconjugate composition between individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls.
    • To identify specific sugar components and their ratios that may serve as biomarkers for schizophrenia.

    Main Methods:

    • Urine samples from five schizophrenic patients and six controls were analyzed.
    • Fractionation of urinary samples using gel filtration and anion exchange chromatography.
    • Quantification of hexose, uronate, rhamnose, fucose, and galactose/mannose ratios in different glycoconjugate fractions.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly reduced hexose levels in fraction II (acidic glycopeptides/oligosaccharides) and uronate levels in fraction III (glycosaminoglycans) in schizophrenic patients.
    • Lower galactose/mannose ratio in fraction II glycoconjugates from schizophrenic patients.
    • Significantly lower rhamnose and higher fucose levels in fraction I (basic/neutral glycopeptides/oligosaccharides) glycoconjugates of schizophrenic patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Urinary glycoconjugate profiles differ significantly between schizophrenic patients and controls.
    • These findings suggest a distinct pattern of glycoprotein and glycosaminoglycan metabolism in schizophrenia.
    • The identified alterations may offer potential biochemical markers for schizophrenia.
