    Summary

This study reviewed 70 multiple sclerosis cases, finding spinal cord and optic nerve lesions most common. Clinical data suggests optic neuromyelitis may be a multiple sclerosis variant.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Clinical Medicine
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
    • Understanding lesion distribution and disease course is crucial for MS management.
    • Optic neuromyelitis has been debated as a distinct entity or MS variant.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze clinical characteristics of multiple sclerosis cases.
    • To investigate the relationship between optic neuromyelitis and MS.
    • To identify common lesion sites and disease progression patterns in MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series analysis of 70 patients diagnosed with MS.
    • Data collection included patient demographics, clinical symptoms, lesion sites, disease onset, and survival.
    • Clinical findings were correlated to support or refute hypotheses on MS variants.

    Main Results:

    • The study included 70 MS patients (25 male, 45 female) with a mean age of 30.6 years.
    • Spinal cord and optic nerve were the most frequent lesion sites; cerebellum involvement was less common.
    • Acute or subacute onset occurred in 63 cases, with 62 experiencing remission and relapse. Nine deaths were recorded with survival ranging from 0.25 to 4 years.

    Conclusions:

    • Clinical manifestations and pathological findings support classifying optic neuromyelitis as a variant of multiple sclerosis.
    • The high frequency of spinal cord and optic nerve lesions in this cohort aligns with known MS patterns.
    • The study highlights the importance of considering MS variants in neurological diagnosis.
