    Background:

    • Mycoplasmal arthritis occurs naturally in animals and can be induced experimentally.

    • Reliable isolation of mycoplasmas from RA patients' synovial fluid or tissue is lacking.

    • To investigate the role of mycoplasmas in rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To explore potential links between mycoplasmas and other forms of arthritis.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of existing literature on mycoplasma isolation and antibody measurements in arthritis patients.
    • Consideration of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections and their arthritic sequelae.
    • Examination of mycoplasma and ureaplasma isolation from hypogammaglobulinemic patients' arthritic joints.
