[Clinical experience with cefoxitin in pediatric field (author's transl)]
Insights
Cefoxitin is an effective antibiotic for treating acute bacterial infections in children, showing clinical success in 80% of cases. This study found it safe and useful for pediatric bacterial infections.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases
- Bacteriology
- Clinical Pharmacology
Context:
- Acute bacterial infections are common in children.
- Effective antibiotic treatment is crucial for pediatric patient outcomes.
- Cefoxitin is a cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the clinical and bacteriological effectiveness of intravenous cefoxitin in pediatric patients.
- To assess the safety profile of cefoxitin in children with acute bacterial infections.
Summary:
- Twenty children with various bacterial infections (bronchopneumonia, UTI, lymphadenitis, streptococcosis, omphalitis) received intravenous cefoxitin.
- Clinical effectiveness was observed in 16 of 20 patients (80%).
- Bacteriological eradication was achieved in 11 of 15 bacterial strains (73.3%), with minimal side effects reported.
Impact:
- Cefoxitin demonstrates significant clinical utility and a favorable safety profile for treating pediatric bacterial infections.
- The findings support the use of cefoxitin as a valuable therapeutic option in pediatric infectious disease management.
Abstract:
Cefoxitin was given intravenously to 20 children with the following acute bacterial infections: 10 cases of bronchopneumonia, 6 cases of urinary tract infection, 2 cases of cervical purulent lymphadenitis, 1 case of streptococcosis and 1 case of omphalitis. Clinical effectiveness was obtained in 16 cases out of 20 cases and bacteriological effectiveness in 11 strains out of 15 strains. No side effect was observed except for 1 case with eruption and 1 case with slight elevation of GOT. From the above clinical results, it is apparent that cefoxitin is a useful antibiotic for treating pediatric patients with various kinds of bacterial infections.
