Chronic gastritis and alcohol

R Cheli, A Giacosa, G Marenco

    Zeitschrift Fur Gastroenterologie
    |September 1, 1981

    Summary

Chronic alcohol consumption does not significantly increase the risk of chronic gastritis. However, abstemious patients with liver cirrhosis showed increased preatrophic gastritis in both fundic and antral mucosa.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Hepatology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Chronic gastritis is a common condition affecting the stomach lining.
    • Alcohol consumption is a potential risk factor for various gastrointestinal diseases.
    • The specific role of alcohol in the development of chronic gastritis requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and the incidence of chronic gastritis.
    • To compare the histological patterns of fundic and antral mucosa in different groups based on alcohol intake and liver status.

    Main Methods:

    • Histological examination of fundic and antral mucosa.
    • Inclusion of four groups: asymptomatic non-alcoholic volunteers, heavy drinkers without cirrhosis, alcoholics with cirrhosis, and non-alcoholic subjects with cirrhosis.

    Main Results:

    • Increased incidence of preatrophic gastritis in both fundic and antral mucosa was observed in abstemious patients with liver cirrhosis.
    • No significant differences in chronic gastritis incidence were found between asymptomatic non-alcoholics, heavy drinkers without cirrhosis, and alcoholics with cirrhosis.
    • When age-matched, no significant differences in chronic gastritis incidence were observed across all four groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Alcohol does not appear to play a significant role in the development of chronic gastritis.
    • Liver cirrhosis, particularly in abstemious individuals, may be associated with an increased incidence of preatrophic gastritis.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind preatrophic gastritis in liver cirrhosis patients.
