    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Endoscopic Surgery
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Gastrointestinal polyps require accurate diagnosis and treatment.
    • Endoscopic polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for polyp removal.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the outcomes of 160 consecutive fibre-optic endoscopic polypectomies.
    • To assess the efficacy and diagnostic yield of endoscopic polypectomy in the gastrointestinal tract.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 160 fibre-optic endoscopic polypectomies.
    • Analysis of polyp retrieval rates and histological findings.
    • Correlation of polyp size with atypia and invasive carcinoma.

    Main Results:

    • 16 of 22 upper digestive tract polyps were retrieved; one gastric polyp showed early intramucosal carcinoma.
    • 132 of 138 colonic polyps were retrieved, with 79% being adenomas.
    • Colonic adenomas >10 mm showed increased rates of severe atypia (up to 32%) and invasive carcinoma (up to 5%).

    Conclusions:

    • Endoscopic polypectomy is a valuable and promising procedure for gastrointestinal polyp diagnosis and treatment.
    • The risk of severe atypia and invasive carcinoma increases with colonic adenoma size.
    • Carefully performed endoscopic polypectomy is crucial for effective management.
