    Summary

    This study tested a new intraocular lens (IOL) fixation method in cats. While complications occurred, the technique showed promise for evaluating IOL-corneal toxicity, with significant endothelial cell loss observed in some cases.

    Background:

    • Traditional intraocular lens (IOL) fixation can involve loops.
    • A novel fixation technique using iris sutures and haptic holes was explored.
    • Assessing IOL-corneal endothelial toxicity is crucial for patient safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a new suture-based fixation technique for intraocular lenses in feline eyes.
    • To assess the incidence of complications and outcomes associated with this method.
    • To determine the potential of this technique for future lens-corneal endothelial toxicity studies.

    Main Methods:

    • Intraocular lenses without loops were implanted in cat eyes using iris sutures and haptic fixation.
    • Complications, outcomes, and endothelial cell loss were monitored post-surgery.
    • Control eyes (wound only) were used for comparison of cell changes.

    • Excellent results were achieved in 37 out of 54 implanted IOLs.

    • The suture-based IOL fixation technique demonstrated feasibility in feline eyes.
    • The method may serve as a valuable model for investigating the endothelial toxicity of new intraocular lens designs.
    • Further research is warranted to refine the technique and minimize complications.
