    Summary

    Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in hydrocephalic patients correlates with delayed visual evoked potentials (VEP) latency. This suggests VEP can monitor severe head injuries and assess shunt function.

    Background:

    • Hydrocephalus can lead to increased intracranial pressure (ICP).
    • Severe head trauma can cause secondary intracranial hypertension.
    • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) measure the brain's electrical activity in response to visual stimuli.

    Observation:

    • Investigated the correlation between intracranial pressure (ICP) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) latency in hydrocephalic patients with severe head trauma.
    • Observed a positive correlation between elevated ICP and increased latency of wave N2 in VEP.

    Findings:

    • A direct relationship exists between rising intracranial pressure and delayed VEP wave N2 latency.
    • Normal latency for VEP wave N2 is 71 +/- 9.2 msec.
