    Summary

    This study reviewed 41 invasive cervical cancer cases during pregnancy. Survival rates for stage I cervical cancer in pregnant patients were similar to non-pregnant patients, regardless of treatment.

    Background:

    • Invasive cervical carcinoma during pregnancy presents unique management challenges.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improved outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate treatment outcomes and survival rates for invasive cervical cancer associated with pregnancy.
    • To compare survival rates of pregnant and non-pregnant patients with stage I cervical cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 41 cases of invasive cervical carcinoma during pregnancy treated between 1961 and 1979.
    • Inclusion of postpartum patients diagnosed within 6 months of delivery.
    • Analysis of treatment modalities including Wertheim-Taussig hysterectomy and radiotherapy, stratified by disease stage.

    Main Results:

    • Stage IA disease (n=3) had a 100% 5-year survival rate with Wertheim-Taussig hysterectomy.
    • Stage IB disease (n=22) showed a 90% 5-year actuarial survival rate.
    • Stage II disease (n=12) treated with radiotherapy had a 24% 5-year actuarial survival rate.
    • No survivors were observed in stages III and IV disease (n=2).

    Conclusions:

    • Treatment outcomes for stage I cervical cancer in pregnant patients are comparable to non-pregnant patients.
    • Treatment method for stage I cervical cancer in pregnancy does not significantly impact survival rates.
    • Advanced stages of cervical cancer during pregnancy are associated with poor prognosis.
