    Background:

    • Schistosoma mansoni releases factors that inhibit lymphocyte proliferation in vitro.
    • The immune response to parasitic infections is complex and often involves immune evasion strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the in vivo effects of a dialyzable schistosome incubation product (DSIP) on cell-mediated immunity.
    • To determine if DSIP contributes to immune modulation during Schistosoma mansoni infection.

    Main Methods:

    • DSIP was administered to C57B1/6 mice and Fisher rats (infected and uninfected).
    • Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was assessed.
    • Lymphocyte proliferation assays using Schistosoma mansoni antigen and concanavalin A (Con A) were performed.
    • Spleen cells were purified using nylon wool columns.

    Main Results:

    • DSIP significantly inhibited DTH responses in mice.
    • In infected rats, DSIP suppressed specific lymphocyte responses to S. mansoni antigen and Con A-induced proliferation.
    • DSIP also inhibited Con A-induced proliferation in uninfected rats.
    • Nylon wool purification restored Con A response in DSIP-treated rats, suggesting involvement of nylon wool-adherent cells.
    • However, nylon wool depletion did not restore S. mansoni antigen response in infected rats.

    Conclusions:

    • DSIP plays a role in modulating cellular immune responses during Schistosoma mansoni infection.
    • DSIP may represent a mechanism by which the parasite evades the host immune system.
    • Further research is needed to fully elucidate the immunomodulatory mechanisms of DSIP.
