Recurrent dislocation of extensor carpi ulnaris tendon

W A Eckhardt, A K Palmer

    The Journal of Hand Surgery
    |November 1, 1981

    Summary

Symptomatic extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon subluxation, often missed, can result from ECU tendon sheath attenuation. Surgical sheath reconstruction effectively resolves wrist pain and restores function.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Musculoskeletal Disorders
    • Wrist Anatomy

    Background:

    • Extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon subluxation is a rare wrist condition.
    • Tendon sheath attenuation can lead to ECU subluxation.
    • Accurate diagnosis is often challenging.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of symptomatic ECU tendon subluxation were identified.
    • The underlying cause was extensor carpi ulnaris tendon sheath attenuation.
    • Patients presented with wrist pain and dysfunction.

    Findings:

    • Extensor carpi ulnaris tendon sheath attenuation is a cause of ECU tendon subluxation.
    • Surgical reconstruction of the tendon sheath successfully relieved symptoms.
    • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for positive outcomes.

    Implications:

    • Increased awareness of this condition is needed among clinicians.
    • Tendon sheath reconstruction is a viable treatment option.
    • Further research may elucidate the etiology of sheath attenuation.
