Myocardial oxygen extraction rate under general anesthesia

T Yusa, S Obara

The Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine
    |March 1, 1981

    Summary

Anesthetic agents impact myocardial oxygen extraction. Pentobarbital, Thalamonal, and halothane showed normal oxygen extraction, unlike ether, methoxyflurane, and enflurane, which significantly reduced it.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Physiology
    • Anesthesiology

    Background:

    • Maintaining myocardial oxygen supply-demand balance is crucial during anesthesia.
    • Different anesthetic agents can affect cardiac function and oxygen utilization.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of eight anesthetic agents on myocardial oxygen extraction rates (R) in dogs.
    • To assess the balance between myocardial oxygen consumption and supply under general anesthesia.

    Main Methods:

    • Myocardial oxygen extraction rates (R) were measured in dogs.
    • Dogs were anesthetized using eight different anesthetic agents: pentobarbital, Thalamonal, droperidol and pentazocine, morphine, halothane, ether, methoxyflurane, and enflurane.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in R values was observed for basal anesthesia (pentobarbital), neuroleptanesthesia (Thalamonal, droperidol and pentazocine), morphine, or halothane anesthesia.
    • These R values were comparable to those reported for conscious dogs.
    • Significantly lower R values were found with ether, methoxyflurane, and enflurane anesthesia.

    Conclusions:

    • Certain anesthetic agents (ether, methoxyflurane, enflurane) significantly impair myocardial oxygen extraction.
    • Anesthetic selection is critical for maintaining myocardial oxygen balance during general anesthesia.
