Multifocal Best's disease and sickle cell trait

S O Galinos, R B Birrer, J Tsamparlakis

    Annals of Ophthalmology
    |October 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

This study reports the first documented case of coexisting Best's macular dystrophy and sickle cell trait in a young man. The findings highlight the importance of considering genetic predispositions in retinal examinations.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Medical Genetics

    Background:

    • Best's macular dystrophy is an inherited retinal disorder affecting central vision.
    • Sickle cell trait is a common inherited blood disorder.

    Observation:

    • A 22-year-old man presented with multiple intraretinal, cyst-like lesions in both eyes during a routine eye checkup.
    • Clinical findings, imaging, and electrophysiology suggested multifocal Best's macular dystrophy.

    Findings:

    • Hemoglobin electrophoresis confirmed sickle cell trait (AS pattern).
    • This case represents the first documented instance of Best's macular dystrophy coexisting with sickle cell trait.

    Implications:

    • This unique case highlights the potential for co-occurrence of distinct genetic conditions.
    • Further research may explore shared genetic or environmental factors influencing retinal health in individuals with sickle cell trait.
