Background:

Thyroid carcinoma is a rare diagnosis, representing a small fraction of hospital admissions.
Understanding the epidemiology and types of thyroid cancer is crucial for effective patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the incidence, types, and patient demographics of thyroid carcinoma at a specific institution over a 25-year period.
To present recommendations for surgical treatment and follow-up based on the reviewed cases.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 680 surgical specimens of thyroid disease.
Analysis of 31 confirmed cases of thyroid carcinoma diagnosed between January 1950 and December 1975.
Categorization of carcinoma subtypes including follicular, papillary, mixed, Hurthle cell, and medullary.

Main Results:

Thyroid carcinoma accounted for 0.001% of all admissions during the study period.
A total of 31 cases were identified: 18 females (58%) and 13 males (42%).
The most common types were follicular carcinoma (11 cases) and papillary carcinoma (11 cases), followed by mixed papillary and follicular (7 cases).

Conclusions:

Thyroid carcinoma is a rare condition, particularly among the Black population at this institution.
The study highlights the distribution of different thyroid carcinoma subtypes and their occurrence in relation to patient demographics.
Findings support the need for continued surveillance and tailored surgical and follow-up strategies for thyroid cancer patients.
