    Summary

    Marathon runners with airway obstruction (FEV1/FVC 63.3%) required greater ventilation during intense exercise. Despite this pulmonary dysfunction, they still achieved high exercise performance levels.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Compare cardiorespiratory parameters during exercise in runners with airway obstruction (RAO), non-athletic controls (CON), and runners with normal lung function (RNL).
    • Assess ventilatory responses to hypercapnia and hypoxia in these groups.

    • Evaluated lung function (FEV1/FVC) in 127 marathon runners.
