    Summary

The Attenborough total knee prosthesis shows promising results for patients with severe knee degeneration, improving function and patient satisfaction. However, indications appear limited to those with reduced mobility and significant knee deformity.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthrosis commonly lead to severe knee joint degeneration.
    • Total knee arthroplasty is a common surgical intervention for end-stage knee joint disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction following Attenborough total knee arthroplasty.
    • To determine the efficacy and potential limitations of the Attenborough prosthesis.

    Main Methods:

    • A follow-up study was conducted on 20 Attenborough total knee prostheses in 15 patients.
    • Patients were monitored for one to three years post-surgery.
    • Pre- and post-operative knee flexion, walking distance, and subjective satisfaction were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Knee flexion improved significantly, from an average of 17 to 84 degrees pre-operatively to 3 to 92 degrees post-operatively.
    • 5% of patients experienced deep infection, and one case showed prosthetic loosening.
    • Significant patellofemoral pain occurred in 25% of patients; however, walking distance improved in most cases.

    Conclusions:

    • The Attenborough total knee prosthesis demonstrates comparable results to other prostheses, with high patient satisfaction.
    • Indications for this prosthesis may be limited to patients with restricted physical activity and severe knee deformity.
    • Further research is warranted to optimize patient selection and long-term outcomes.
