    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical characteristics and renal outcomes of patients with chronic potassium depletion.
    • To investigate the pathogenesis and histological findings in these patients.
    • To establish the term chronic kaliopenic nephropathy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 23 patients with hypokalemia.
    • Evaluation of renal function, kidney histology, and relevant biochemical parameters.
    • Assessment of plasma renin activity and aldosterone levels.

    Main Results:

    • 23 patients (average age 36.6 years) experienced hypokalemia for an average of 6.5 years.
    • Renal function deteriorated with duration of depletion; two developed end-stage renal failure.
    • Kidney histology showed chronic abacterial interstitial nephritis; electrolyte imbalances and elevated renin/aldosterone were common.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic kaliopenic nephropathy is a justified term for kidney disease caused by prolonged potassium depletion.
    • Early diagnosis and management are crucial to prevent irreversible renal damage.
    • Further research into diagnostic and therapeutic strategies is warranted.
