Dermatoglyphics and systemic lupus erythematosus

    Summary

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients showed distinct finger print patterns, specifically more low endings of line A and altered interdigital patterns. These dermatoglyphic differences were not linked to HLA antigens in this Austrian cohort.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with complex etiology.
    • Dermatoglyphics, the study of fingerprints, may offer insights into genetic predispositions for diseases.
    • Previous research has explored dermatoglyphic variations in various autoimmune conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate potential associations between finger and palmar dermatoglyphics and SLE in a specific population.
    • To compare dermatoglyphic patterns in female SLE patients with healthy female controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of finger tip and palmar dermatoglyphics from 37 female SLE patients and 100 female controls.
    • Participants were native inhabitants of Eastern Austria.
    • Comparison of dermatoglyphic features, including line A endings and interdigital patterns, between groups.

    • SLE patients exhibited a significantly higher frequency of low endings of line A on both hands compared to controls.

    • These findings suggest that dermatoglyphics could potentially serve as a supplementary marker in SLE research.
    • The lack of association with specific HLA antigens warrants further investigation into other genetic or environmental factors influencing these dermatoglyphic variations in SLE.
