    Summary

    Topical corticosteroids effectively reduce contact allergen patch test reactions in sensitized individuals. Four common corticosteroid preparations showed similar suppressive effects on reaction intensity and size.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the suppressive effects of four commercially available topical corticosteroids on patch test reactions.
    • To compare the efficacy of different corticosteroid preparations in reducing allergic contact dermatitis severity.

    • Four corticosteroid solutions (betamethasone valerate, betamethasone dipropionate, hydrocortisone-17-butyrate, triamcinolone acetonide) were applied to pre-sensitized skin sites.
    • Patch tests with various contact allergens were performed on treated and control sites.
    • Reaction intensity and size were measured 24 hours after patch removal.

    • Topical corticosteroid application significantly suppressed both the intensity and size of epicutaneous reactions.
