    Summary

    Guinea-pig macrophages showed no ability to kill leptospira bacteria. These immune cells also demonstrated limited capacity to engulf (phagocytose) both virulent and saprophytic leptospira strains.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the interaction between guinea-pig macrophages and Leptospira.
    • To assess the bactericidal and phagocytic capabilities of macrophages against Leptospira.

    Main Methods:

    • Macrophages were isolated from guinea pigs.
    • Macrophages were co-incubated with virulent and saprophytic Leptospira strains at 37°C for 120 minutes.
    • Bactericidal activity and phagocytosis were evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • Guinea-pig macrophages demonstrated no significant bactericidal activity against either virulent or saprophytic Leptospira strains.
    • Macrophages exhibited weak phagocytic activity towards both Leptospira strains over the 120-minute observation period.

    • Guinea-pig macrophages possess limited effectiveness in controlling Leptospira infections.
    • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of Leptospira evasion of macrophage defenses.
