    Summary

    Esophageal dysfunction, particularly impaired peristalsis and lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function, is linked to reduced lung function in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) may worsen pulmonary fibrosis in these patients.

    Background:

    • Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is an autoimmune disease affecting multiple organs.
    • Esophageal dysfunction is common in PSS and can impact lung health.
    • The relationship between esophageal motility and lung function abnormalities in PSS requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the influence of esophageal dysfunction on lung function abnormalities in patients with PSS.
    • To compare pulmonary function tests based on different degrees of esophageal motility in PSS patients.

    • Pulmonary function tests were conducted on 24 patients with PSS.
    • Patients were categorized into three groups based on esophageal motility: normal, impaired peristalsis with normal lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and impaired peristalsis with LES dysfunction.
