M Schou, P Helin

    Acta Dermato-Venereologica
    |January 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Levamisole did not improve wart regression in patients with common warts or venereal warts. The study found no significant difference in wart clearance or delayed hypersensitivity response compared to the control group.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Levamisole is known to restore depressed delayed hypersensitivity.
    • Warts, particularly multiple or treatment-resistant cases, may indicate immune deficiency.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of levamisole in treating common warts and condyloma (venereal warts).
    • To assess levamisole's impact on delayed hypersensitivity in patients with warts.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind study involving 49 patients with common warts and 50 with condyloma.
    • Patients received levamisole (150 mg daily for 3 days every second week) or a placebo.
    • Delayed hypersensitivity was measured using the Mantoux response.

    Main Results:

    • Levamisole treatment did not result in enhanced wart regression compared to the control group after 6 weeks.
    • No significant inter-group difference was observed in the change of delayed hypersensitivity response.

    Conclusions:

    • Levamisole is not effective in promoting wart regression for common warts or condyloma.
    • The drug did not significantly alter delayed hypersensitivity as measured by the Mantoux response in this patient cohort.
