Immunological characteristics of cells infiltrating sponge-matrix allografts in rats
The morphological and functional characterization of cells infiltrating sponge-matrix allografts was done in rats. A higher percentage of esterase positive cells in the allografts already on day 1, with a gradual increase until day 7, was found. There was also a rise in percentage of esterase positive cells in peripheral blood of the allograft recipients. A higher percentage of phagocytic cells in the allografts on day 1, compared to syngeneic grafts, and a gradual rise during the ensuing six days were observed. These findings indicate the possibility of early recognition of alloantigen in the graft by monocytes and macrophages.
