    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Medicine
    • Musculoskeletal Disorders

    Background:

    • Adolescent chest and upper abdominal pain are common presenting complaints.
    • Differentiating benign musculoskeletal causes from serious conditions is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of costochondritis in adolescents presenting with chest or upper abdominal pain.
    • To determine the efficacy of conservative management for this condition.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective evaluation of 100 adolescent clinic patients with chest or upper abdominal pain.
    • Clinical assessment including palpation for reproducible tenderness of costal cartilages.
    • Analysis of pain laterality and affected cartilage location.

    Main Results:

    • Seventy-nine percent of patients were diagnosed with costochondritis.
    • Costochondritis was more frequently unilateral than bilateral (P=0.001).
    • The left fourth sternocostal cartilage was the most commonly affected site.

    Conclusions:

    • Costochondritis is a frequent cause of chest and abdominal pain in adolescents.
    • Conservative treatment with analgesics and reassurance is effective.
    • This diagnosis can help avoid unnecessary and costly investigations.
