    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if behavioral changes can serve as early indicators of benzene toxicity.
    • To quantify behavioral alterations in mice following controlled benzene inhalation exposure.

    Main Methods:

    • Adult mice (CD1 and C57BL/6J strains) were exposed to 300 or 900 ppm benzene for 6 hours daily.
    • A time-sampling protocol was used to observe and quantify seven behavioral categories: stereotypic behavior, sleeping, resting, eating, grooming, locomotion, and fighting.
    • Dynamic vapor exposure techniques were employed in standard inhalation chambers.

    Main Results:

    • Benzene inhalation at 300 or 900 ppm significantly increased the occurrence of eating and grooming behaviors.
    • Exposure to benzene reduced the number of mice observed sleeping or resting.
