    Summary

The Xonics-Electron-Radio-Graphy (XERG) system offers low-dose mammography. Its magnification technique provides high-quality images comparable to conventional methods at a fraction of the radiation dose.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Imaging
    • Radiology
    • Mammography Technology

    Background:

    • The Xonics-Electron-Radio-Graphy (XERG) system represents a novel ionographic imaging technology.
    • Clinical applicability of high-pressure gas ionography was previously limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the XERG system's principles, function, and imaging characteristics.
    • To report initial clinical experiences and evaluate its diagnostic potential.
    • To assess the XERG system's performance in low-dose mammography.

    Main Methods:

    • Description of the XERG system's basic principles and operational function.
    • Evaluation of imaging qualities including contrast, edge-effect, and quantum noise.
    • Clinical application using contact and magnification (1.5-fold) techniques.
    • Dose rate comparison with screenless mammography film and film-screen systems.

    Main Results:

    • The XERG system produces transparent X-ray negative images.
    • Image quality shows good contrast but moderate edge-effect and high quantum noise.
    • Extremely low dose rate achieved (4.5% of screenless mammography film).
    • Magnification technique yields results comparable to screenless film mammography at 1/10th the dose, superior to film-screen systems.

    Conclusions:

    • The XERG system, particularly with magnification, achieves high-quality mammograms at significantly reduced radiation doses.
    • It represents a substantial advancement for high-quality, low-dose mammography applications.
    • Further clinical evaluation is warranted to establish its full potential in breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
