    Background:

    • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the nasal cavity, accessory sinuses, and nasopharynx is a rare malignancy.
    • The incidence of this cancer among the general population is low.
    • Dentists are exposed to various airborne particles during procedures.

    Observation:

    • Two dentists in Alberta were diagnosed with extensive anaplastic SCC involving the nasal cavity and accessory sinuses in 1973.
    • This represented an incidence rate of 298 per 100,000 among dentists, significantly higher than the general population.
    • The total registration for SCC of the nasal cavity, accessory sinuses, and nasopharynx in Alberta was 28 cases in 1973.

    Findings:

    • The observed incidence rate among dentists (298 per 100,000) is substantially higher than the maximum expected rate in the general male population over 24 years of age (6.8 per 100,000).
    • The study highlights a potential occupational carcinogenic hazard associated with inhaled oil droplets from high-speed air rotor dental drills.
    • No previous reports in the medical literature have identified this specific occupational hazard.

    Implications:

    • This research suggests a possible link between dental drilling aerosols and the development of SCC in dentists.
    • Further investigation is warranted to confirm the role of inhaled oil droplets as a carcinogenic agent in the dental profession.
    • Protective measures and further research into dental aerosols are recommended to mitigate occupational risks for dentists.
