    Summary

    Following partial hepatectomy in rats, cathepsin B1 and D activities decreased significantly, lagging behind total protein regeneration. This suggests selective control of cathepsin levels during liver repair.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of 2/3 hepatectomy on cathepsin B1 and D activity in adult rats.
    • To compare the changes in cathepsin activity with total liver protein and other enzyme activities during liver regeneration.

    Main Methods:

    • Adult rats underwent 2/3 hepatectomy or sham operation.
    • Specific and total activities of cathepsins B1 and D were measured.
    • Total liver protein, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase activities were assessed.

    • Both cathepsin B1 and D specific activities decreased significantly post-hepatectomy compared to controls.
    • Cathepsin levels dropped in parallel with total protein for 18 hours, then diverged as protein levels recovered.
    • Lactate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase activities increased during early liver regeneration.

    Conclusions:

    • Cathepsin B1 and D levels are selectively regulated during liver regeneration.
    • Reduced cathepsin activity may contribute to decreased protein degradation in early liver regeneration phases.
