Background:

Transfusions during heart-lung machine surgery carry risks.
Hepatitis transmission via blood products was a concern before widespread screening.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the incidence of hepatitis following cardiac surgery utilizing a heart-lung machine.
To identify potential causes and contributing factors to post-transfusion hepatitis.

Main Methods:

Retrospective follow-up of 333 patients who underwent heart-lung machine surgery between 1975 and 1976.
Analysis of hepatitis cases, including etiology and transfusion history.

Main Results:

Seven patients (2.1%) developed hepatitis post-surgery.

The incidence of hepatitis B post-transfusion in this cohort was low but preventable with contemporary screening methods like radioimmuno-assay (RIA).
Improvements in blood donor screening significantly reduce transfusion-transmitted hepatitis risks.
